How much water do you think is in your body?

Are you 50% water?  90%?

Well the truth is, our bodies are approximately 60% water.

Because we lose water through sweat and urination, it’s recommended we drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water daily.  The 8X8 rule, if you will.

I learned, however, that we’re in a constant state of dehydration and that drinking a whole gallon of water daily is the way to go.

That’s the equivalent of sixteen eight ounce glasses per day.

So what’s the truth?

How Much Water Should We Drink Daily?

Researchers have found that if we don’t stay hydrated throughout the day, we can suffer lower energy levels, and even lower brain function!

Fluid loss through exercise has shown to decrease concentration and mood, and even the occurrence of headaches.

In addition, increased water intake may help with:

  • Constipation
  • Certain Cancer Prevention
  • Kidney Stones
  • Acne

Well if that’s not a reason to drink more water, I don’t know what is!

Can Drinking More Water Help Me Lose Weight?

It’s a very common belief that water has an effect on weight loss.

It may even increase metabolism (especially cold water) and suppress your appetite!

Two studies even claim that drinking 17 ounces of water (just under a venti cup at Starbucks) can temporarily boost your metabolism by up to 30%!

Drinking two full liters of water may even help you increase energy expenditure by approximately 96 calories every day!  Whew!

Will I Get The Same Results From OTHER Drinks?

Don’t worry, you don’t have to drink JUST water to meet your 8X8 quota.

One claim is that coffee and tea don’t count because they’re diuretics.  This isn’t proven, though.

In fact, studies actually show that because the diuretic effect of coffee and tea is so mild, it negates that claim.

If you drink a few cups of tea per day and eat water-rich foods such as vegetables, fruits, and certain meats and fish, you should be able to maintain a healthy fluid balance.
