5 Foods That Sabotage Summer Slimming…
There’s almost nothing better than summertime. BBQ’s, Weddings, Camping, Fishing, and Festivals.
With high doses of Vitamin D and warm, sunny weather that promotes exercise and fresh air… it really feels like everything is, well, “happier” in the summer!
But if you’re anything like me, you may have started to feel like your weight loss plan has derailed a bit since the start of this seemingly active, slimming season.
Here are 7 Foods That Sabotage Summer Slimming that will help you make choices that help you feel light and Slim this Summer.
Weight Loss Enemy #1: Over-Eating At The Barbeque…
I love few things more than a nice barbeque. My husband and I love to grill Ribs, Salmon, Trout, Mushrooms, Veggie Skewers, and even Romaine Lettuce!
The Grill is suspect #1 for overeating this summer.
Did you know that a 20-oz. T-Bone Steak can have over 1,500 calories and 124 grams of fat?
Your average cheeseburger isn’t always the healthy option either, as it can pack 750 calories and 45 grams of fat.
Every now and then, I just love ribs or other ‘fatty’ meats. But if you make this a habit for every night, you’re probably consuming more fat than you need.
In order to enjoy delicious fatty foods every day, stick to small portions and focus on switching between plant-based fats like avocado and fats from meat to keep you body trim and lean.
Weight Loss Enemy #2: Snack Platters…
On Christmas a few years ago, my family decided to stop making dinner. That’s right – we STOPPED making a big Christmas dinner! That’s because my aunts and mom would make SO many delicious snacks that people wouldn’t even have room for turkey and mashed potatoes come time for dinner.
At barbeques, it’s easy to set out salami, cheeses, vegetable platters with fattening dressing, and fruit platters with sweet, syrupy dips. And if you’re outside chatting with friends, it’s VERY easy to overdo it on the snack platters.
Did you know that one ounce of potato chips has 160 calories at ten grams of fat? And the sad part is… you can’t eat just one! 😉
My suggestion is to take a plate and cut your salami into teensy pieces. Compose your bites carefully and savor the fattening meat and cheese. Try to avoid processed meats, potato chips, and store-bought dressings in preference of natural, organic whole foods.
If you know that your host or hostess won’t have healthy organic options, it’s always respected when you ‘contribute’ your own platter to the party. Nobody has to know that it’s part of your weight loss plan!
Weight Loss Enemy #3: Sabotaging Sides…
Did you know that a half-cup of potato salad has about 12 grams of fat and nearly 200 calories? Coleslaw is only slightly less fattening.
In order to cut calories and chemicals at the barbeque, try doing an Asian coleslaw without the mayonnaise or my favorite Apple Cider Weight Loss Slaw.
The extra vegetables and vinegar make this a weight loss promoting treat that almost anybody will love.
Slimming Cider Slaw RECIPE:
- 1/4 head Red Cabbage, shredded
- 1/4 head Green Cabbage, shredded
- 1/2 Cup Toasted Pepitas
- 1/2 cup Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar
- 6 Shredded Carrots
- 2 Medium Diced Tomatoes
- 1 Finely-Sliced Leek
- 1/4 C. Extra-Virgin olive oil
- 2 Tbsp. Raw Honey
- Combine all ingredients in large mixing bowl and stir well
- Allow to soak in refrigerator for 30 minutes before serving.
Weight Loss Enemy #4: Sabotaging Salad Toppers
You’ve probably heard that salads are NOT always the way to go if you’re looking to lose weight this summer.
Instead of a fried chicken strip salad, taco salad, or barbequed meats salad, choose a breast of chicken, most fish, and even a small steak at dinner or lunch.
You’ll often find that your waiter will allow you to double up on vegetables with your meal. You’ll definitely pack on LESS fat when you eat a sensible meat and vegetables dish than a salad packed with chemical-laden dressings, croutons, bacon, cheese, and even candied nuts and dried fruits.
Salads that pack on these ‘toppings’ will often add up to over 800 calories, and they’re LOADED with chemicals, sulfites, and fat.
You’re much better off ordering off the non-salad menu and having fresh meat and steamed vegetables.
Weight Loss Enemy #5: Fruity Drinks…
There is pretty much no way that you can get a Pina Colada, Daiquiri, or Margarita without consuming between 250-800 calories… per drink!
Sodas pack in 150 calories or more per can, and sports drinks are loaded with fat-inducing chemicals.
So how can you hydrate with something delicious this summer and NOT pack on the calories?
I recommend enjoying wine, a spritzer, or even fresh lemon, soda water, and a drop or two of Stevia if you’re looking for something refreshing.
